My song Neighbor is one of the most complex projects from my album Speaking in Tongues. It has five vocal parts that I overdubbed 4 times each during the recording. I wanted to put together a video for this song that would feature me singing each of the parts. I searched for easy to use software that would allow me to put this together. After a few tries with other software, I settled on iMovie on my iPhone. I did put together some practice videos to make sure that my face would be centered in the views. In the practice video, I just used one video and I put it in multiple frames to discover that stacking them first worked better than putting them side by side. The video in the center shot was the most difficult to decide how to position.
At my regular job, I had a week where I was giving support to people on the second shift. I was waking up at my regular time, but I was going in late and stay late. I decided to try and film the 5 videos that would make up the main video one of these mornings. I searched for a place in our house with a good background. One of our upstairs rooms has an angled ceiling that I thought would give the video a cool look. The wall at the back of the room is brown and the ceiling is white giving a “V” shape behind me. The Vs lined up to give the overall video an interesting geometric look. That was a nice accident. Something that is in the picture that you cannot see is a ceiling fan that is above my head and a window behind me. My head blocks your view of the window but the sun shining through it flairs in a way that makes the ceiling fan disappear.
The fan isn’t the only thing that you cannot see in this video. I didn’t get completely dressed before I started filming this video. I was not wearing pants during this video shoot.
