First Time Out with the Guys

It was January of 1978 and I was a sophomore in high school.  One of my closest friends had just turned 16 and had his driver’s license.  Another friend had his permit and a car. The guys were ready to get out for the first time on our own.  I told my parents that we planned to go out on Friday night.  Our plans were sketchy at best.  We might go see a movie.  We would definitely ride around town.  One of the big activities for a lot of teenagers my age at that time was to ride down the main drag in our small city of Alamo.  The house where I lived was on this main drag so if my parents were wondering what I was doing, they could usually just wait a few minutes and see us ride by the house.   Riding the strip as high on our agenda and that took up some of our time.  At some point, we decided to go to Jackson to the movies.  When we got there, we were late to see the early showing of Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety. We decided we would hang out until the late showing. In the meantime we went to a bowling alley and hung out.  We didn’t bowl.  We were trying to cram everything into this night that we could like we would never be allowed to hang out together again.

Movie Decisions

It was late 1979 and I was a senior in high school.  Most weekends my buddies and I decided to go to the movies and there were a couple of films that we were considering. I was driving so I took the lead in deciding we would go to see Apocalypse Now. It had been released earlier in the year but had just made it to theaters in our area.  My friends were not as excited about seeing it as I was.  I didn’t really know that much about it, but I knew there was a lot of buzz around it.  I knew it was a war movie so that was the angle I would use to sell the idea to my friends.

Elvis Double Feature

Elvis Presley’s last feature films that weren’t concert films were released in 1969.  Some people probably think I’ve seen a lot of Elvis movies in theaters.  I only remember going to the theater once to see any of these films. I don’t remember exactly when this happened, but my Aunt Della took me and her son Don to see an Elvis double feature at a theater in Humboldt, Tennessee, probably in the very early 1970’s.  When we showed up at the theater, The Trouble With Girls had already started. The main thing I remember about this film was a carnival and a scene involving out of control fireworks.

Gigantic Popcorn

When I was in high school, my friends and I went to the movies a lot.  Almost every weekend, we went to see something.  Part of this experience was getting popcorn and a soft drink.  I liked getting the biggest popcorn and drink they offered.  This was in the days before they had the combo deals on popcorn and a drink.  I began noticing that when I would order the large popcorn and drink, they would always go over and pick up the popcorn container and ask, “this one?” just to confirm that I wanted the largest one they had.  I could see this being their default response to asking about it because there would be no reason to dirty up one of those largest containers unless someone truly wanted that size. So, I because familiar with their routine.  I also thought I would try to make my desire for the largest size clear so they wouldn’t have to get clarification from me.  On one visit I tried this out by declaring I wanted a “GIGANTIC” popcorn and a “GIGANTIC” Coke.  The young lady behind the counter replied in a snarky voice, “We only have large!”  I told her to just give me the large and I mumbled my own snarky comments to my friends. They weren’t loud enough for her to hear but she knew I was talking about her. I got my snacks and didn’t think anything else about it until my next trip to the movies.

Elvis Movie

Because of my repeated various connections to Elvis, people are naturally interested in my reaction to the new Elvis movie.  As a fan of the Elvis phenomenon as well as a fan of Baz Luhrmann films, I had high expectations for this film.  It didn’t disappoint.  I also continue to purchase movies that I like on Blu-ray and I am already planning to pick this one up.  Its not a perfect film, but it’s really good and I highly recommend it to Elvis fans. I also think non-fans will enjoy it. If you’ve read this far, go and see the movie if you haven’t.  You know you want to.

Bad Date

I never had a girlfriend in high school. Dates never turned into relationships. It was a rare occasion when I went out with a girl more than once. I have a cousin who would occasionally set me up on blind dates. We would double date on these occasions to try and make things go well. Things never clicked on these dates. There was one evening that seems more memorable than the others.

Movie Restroom Stories

Over the summer while my youngest daughter was home from college, she and I went to the movies a couple of times.  My son lives in town and we invited him to go with us on both trips.  The two films we went to see were Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Annabelle Comes Home.  Both trips took place during the same week.

Favorite Christmas Movies

I consider myself to be a movie lover.  There are a handful of movies that I consider my absolute favorites that you would think I would watch them on a regular basis that I can go for years without watching.  But I always watch my favorite Christmas movies every December.  This is not intended as a complete list of every Christmas movie that I like. It only includes the ones that I absolutely have to watch every year.  If you haven’t seen these films, I highly recommend them all. This is not intended as a review of these films, only a recommendation list and a few of the reasons I suggest watching them.

Watching The Room

For a long time, I have been a fan of cult films and movies that are considered “bad”. I am always looking for bad films that I haven’t heard of before. A few years ago while looking at the CNN website, I saw a link to an entertainment article that said “A Room with a Cult Following”.  Before I clicked on the link, I assumed the article was about the film A Room with a View and I wondered why it would have a cult following. It turned out to be about a film called The Room by a first-time filmmaker called Tommy Wiseau. I found a copy of the film and decided to watch it by myself.  I was sleepy the night I started watching it but didn’t want to fall asleep on it, so I stopped about halfway. The next night, I finished watching it. I had watched it in our living room and my wife was already in the bed for the night. She had not fallen asleep yet when I walked in and told her that I thought I had just watched the worst movie I had ever seen in my life.  She could tell I was serious. She had watched with me many of the worst films ever made and for me to declare this one as the worst was saying something. She was sick and stayed at home from work the next day.  She watched it that day and she agreed.  While she was watching, she texted me a running commentary about how bad it was.

Christmas Traditions

Our family Christmas traditions have changed over the years. Ever since I was a child, my family would always go to my mother’s parents’ house on Christmas Eve. This tradition continued until my grandfather died.  The last 3 years he was alive, I lived about 4 hours away from my grandfather. My wife and I had committed to spending Christmas Eve with my grandfather and our children spending Christmas morning in their own home. This made for some quick visits and fast trips home but it was worth it in the end.  After my grandfather died, my mom started doing Christmas Eve at her house. Soon, she started inviting my dad’s family. My father continued to have his siblings over for Christmas Eve after my mom passed away and that is the tradition we continue to this day.
