In previous posts, I have talked about my weekend in Hong Kong in 2006. In addition to shopping for a Fake Rolex, I spent this weekend being attacked by monkeys and a handicapped boy. While we were still looking for a fake Rolex vendor, we were standing at an intersection next to the street market. The vendors had their booths set-up in the street, so it was no problem for us and everyone else to be standing in the street.
While we were trying to decide on our next option for the night, a man wearing radio headphones approached us. This was the first time I had seen anyone wearing radio headphones since the 1970’s. As the man got closer, he looked at me and started laughing. He came up beside me and patted me on the shoulder like a long, lost friend. He continued to smile and laugh as he stood slightly to my right side. Suddenly, he reached out in from of himself like he was shooting a rifle at the ground while shouting “BANG! BANG!” He laughed a little more then repeated his gun motions while repeating “BANG! BANG!” I thought the guy figured that I was an American and he didn’t like the war we were fighting in Iraq. My traveling companion Mike thought he was probably just drunk. I never felt in danger, but I felt better when a couple of women from a nearby restaurant called him over to them. We watched as he walked over and talked to them for a couple of minutes. When they were done talking, he handed them some bananas out of a bag he had in his hand. Then he left up a stairway next to the restaurant. That evening, I wrote the following in my travel journal:
“I was attacked by a monkey a drunk and a handicapped boy in Hong Kong all in the same day.”
