Printer’s Drawer

Printer’s drawers were originally used in the printing business to store the type that was used in the presses.  When printing technology changed most of the type was melted and repurposed for other things.  Many of the drawers from the type cabinets were sold to antique stores where they were sold as knick-knack shelves.  We have one of these in our music room.  But there is a story behind our printer’s drawer that makes it special.

Our drawer was originally used to store type at The Crockett Times, the newspaper where my dad worked when I was born.  My birth announcement in the paper was on the front page.  It’s possible that some of the type used to print that story was stored in our drawer.  My dad did several things while he worked at the paper including writing the sports column.  Years after the printing technology changed, the owners of the paper sold the press and the equipment that went with it.  My dad bought some of this including several printers drawers.

A few years after we were married, my wife started working at The Crockett Times as their news editor.  She worked there until our first child was born.  The printer’s drawer has emotional value to both may wife and my father because of their connections to the newspaper where it was used.
