My mother-in-law moved to San Antonio, Texas a few years before my kids were born. My wife and I have made several trips there both before and after our children were born. Our first attempt at a trip was cut short when we were rear ended by a drunk driver in Little Rock, Arkansas just after midnight on a Friday the 13th. The details of that trip can be seen in my Arkansas Stories blog post. This includes details of a race riot, an annoying “helper” on the side of the road, a nightclub at the airport Holiday Inn and a ride in a wrecker.
Our next trip was almost didn’t happen when my wife, Andrea, had a seizure the night before we were leaving. The details of that seizure are in my Epilepsy San Antonio Trip blog post. Ultimately, we decided to continue on with our plans to travel. Being our first visit there, we make all of the tourist stops like the Riverwalk. Our visit to the Alamo was special because we lived in Alamo, Tennessee located in Crockett County. The name of the Alamo High School yearbook was The Fort. We were also big fans of the movie Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and he visits the Alamo, looking for his stolen bicycle in the basement. We did resist the temptation to ask to see the non-existent basement of the Alamo.
Our printer’s drawer has a figurine of the Alamo and a little Davy Crockett that we bought there as a reminder of trip. This is ironic because Andrea has practically no memory of this trip because of the seizure. On our next trip there, we were trying to decide what to do and she said, “Let’s go to the Alamo! We’ve never been there before!” While we went back, we didn’t buy anything new to go into the printer’s drawer.
