4-H Chicken Shack
I went to see my girlfriend at the West Tennessee Fair I knew that she was going and I planned to me her there She went there with her daddy; he’s as nice as he can be But her mama went there too, and she doesn’t care for me They arrived at the parking lot and my girlfriend ran away And met me at the spot we planned earlier that day She hurried through the gates and started to make tracks To our secret meeting place at the 4-H Chicken Shack Her mama started crying; all her daddy did was smile He knew that they would find us if they looked a little while Her mama looked around the quilts and embroidered towels Her daddy looked around the hogs and he looked around the cows Her brother ate a pronto pup and a fiddle stick Cotton candy and funnel cakes until he got sick They could have found us easily if they’d just stopped for a snack And sat down at the tables in the 4-H Chicken Shack They searched around the scrambler and the tilt-a-whirl They searched around the loop-the –loop and the bearded girl They searched around the bumper cars and the wishing well They searched around the horses on the carousel They searched around the shows that have the dancing lady Her mama bought a t-shirt that said “Help me find my baby!” Her daddy rode the Ferris wheel so he could see from front to back It’s a good thing that they have a roof on the 4-H Chicken Shack We could have rode the rides or seen the tractor pull We could have sat up in the stands and watched them ride the bulls We could have won a teddy bear or something just as great By throwing rings at bottles or let them guess our weight We could have looked at jellies or at an apple pie But her mother might have seen us out of the corner of her eye We almost did a lot of things but we wanted to get back To holding hands and pitching woo at the 4-H Chicken Shack We sat around for hours and it started to get late I gave my girl a goodbye kiss and snuck out of the gate She went and found her mother and she told her where she’d been She said she just loves 4-H and hanging out with friends She talked about the chicken. She talked about the slaw. And the pork chop sandwich that’s so good, it should be against the law But she didn’t tell her everything because she’d never get to go back To meet me and to spend time at the 4-H Chicken Shack Art Wheeler © 2013
