High School Evangelist

I went to school with a quiet guy named David.  David was a quiet guy that I never got to know that well.  He was just someone that was there.  He didn’t seem to have many friends.  And he wasn’t involved in many activities.  He seemed to be of average intelligence.  Not too smart, not too dumb.  He was not a class clown. He never did anything much to draw attention to himself.  Until our senior year when he decided to start preaching in the halls.

There was a water fountain in the hall next to the senior English teacher’s classroom.  One day, David was standing next to the water fountain and started preaching about the saving properties of the water from this fountain. I saw him about the time he started his schtick and I immediately thought it was brilliant.  This is the kind of stuff I liked to do.  It was also the perfect thing for a guy like him to do because it was so out of character for him. He told his audience that they should drink from the fountain if they wanted to save their soul.  Most people just went about their business.  If anyone came up and drank from the fountain, he would proclaim that there was another soul saved.  David started this between classes one morning later in the school year.  I was surprised to see him at the fountain later that day still proclaiming the healing powers of the water.  I don’t think he did it at every class changeover, just every time he had a class in that area and had some time to preach.  I think it was about the third or fourth time he started preaching that the two English teachers that were close to the water fountain made him stop.  I don’t know how many souls he saved, but I was a convert to his cause.
