Elvis Presley’s last feature films that weren’t concert films were released in 1969. Some people probably think I’ve seen a lot of Elvis movies in theaters. I only remember going to the theater once to see any of these films. I don’t remember exactly when this happened, but my Aunt Della took me and her son Don to see an Elvis double feature at a theater in Humboldt, Tennessee, probably in the very early 1970’s. When we showed up at the theater, The Trouble With Girls had already started. The main thing I remember about this film was a carnival and a scene involving out of control fireworks.
The other film was Live A Little, Love A Little. I remembered this film better because it was the only time I know that I saw a film being censored in real time. There is a scene in the film where Elvis is talking to a lady and she is wearing a fur coat. Elvis is trying to talk her into taking off the coat. She is insistent that she keeps it off. As Elvis was pushing the coat off her shoulders, the screen went black, but the sound continued. The scene implied that she was nude underneath the coat. I’ve seen this film since that time and naked shoulders were all that you could see in the unedited version. But I guess this was a little more than what they felt comfortable showing to kids in Humboldt, Tennessee.
