Last Saturday evening, my wife cooked a chicken and pasta meal. It had lots of vegetables and the sauce was very light. This meal was very similar to others that she has done in the past. There are some variations on the types and amounts of vegetables and noodles. There is also variation in the sauces. This one was really good. We also had a salad and Italian bread with this meal. She likes to get the extremely long sticks of Italian bread and on Saturday, she got two of these.
After the meal, our family planned to watch an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. This series is one of our favorites. Watching this series as a family is one of those activities that we have done together for years and I am often amazed that it continues to this day. We are less committed to making sure that everyone is present for every new episode that we watch. We do make sure that everyone sees all of the best ones.
For those of you unfamiliar with this show, it ran on Comedy Central from 1989 through 1996 and the Sci Fi Channel from 1997 through 1999. The basic idea of the show was that two mad scientists forced a prisoner on a satellite to watch bad movies. He has two robots that he watches the movies with and they make fun of them, which is the whole purpose of the show. I realize this description is not detailed for the hardcore fan (like myself), but I think this would give a general idea of the show for someone who has never seen it. Anyway, there has been a recent release of episodes on DVD and we were watching one featuring the Sci-Fi classic, War of the Colossal Beast. This is the sequel to another stinker of a film called The Amazing Colossal Man. Both films feature bad special effects to create a giant bald man destroying stuff while wearing a diaper. In War of the Colossal Beast, he is also disfigured. While we were watching this cinematic gem, my wife went to the kitchen and discovered that the two breadsticks that she had gotten for the meal were still in the oven and the oven was still on. This was about 40 minutes into the film. The bread had been cooking since before we started eating. I have no idea what temperature it was cooking at but it wasn’t burnt. She asked if we wanted to try it and of course we did.
The bread was very crusty and we were getting crumbs everywhere. Everyone was getting something extra to drink to wash down all of this extremely dry bread. About this same time, the action in the movie involved some of the characters trying to feed the Colossal Man. They were driving a bread truck into the desert to feed him. The guys on the show were cracking jokes about eating bread. And we were all trying to choke down the last of these loaves of bread.
