Mr. Potato Head for Christmas

Classic Mr. Potato Head

When I a kid, I had a Mr. Potato Head. This was the second generation of these toys. When they were first introduced, they had a body parts that you would attach to an actual potato.  By the time I got mine, they provided you with a plastic potato with holes in it that limited the locations you could put the eyes, ears, nose and mouth. I also had a Katie the Carrot which had similar body parts but a carrot head. In doing research for this story, I discovered there was a whole set of various fruit and vegetable options that were available.

It had been decades since I had paid any attention the Mr. Potato Head when we decided to get our niece one for Christmas when she was about 2 and a half years old. The design had changed significantly. Gone was the body with the flat hands and shoes. The new design just had shoes that attached to the plastic potato. The arms were long flexible parts that stuck out from the side of the head/body slightly below the ear holes.  I also discovered a flap in the rear of the potato that could be used for spare parts and general storage of all parts when it wasn’t playtime.  I pointed this out to my niece saying, “Look, you can put the extra parts in the butt!”  She looked and me and replied “That wasn’t very nice!”  I looked down as I answered, “Yes, I know.” It wasn’t very nice to suggest that you would put anything in a butt. Before I could think very much about this, she told me “It’s a booty.”  My transgression wasn’t that I had suggested putting anything in the rear, but that I had referred to it using an unacceptable in their family.
