A Child’s First Christmas

My oldest daughter’s birthday falls between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.  So for her first Christmas, she was almost a year old.  She was old enough that she would be able to appreciate getting toys. She would also be able to enjoy looking at Christmas decorations. My wife always decorated our whole house for Christmas with at least one tree in every room. This tradition continued for our daughter’s first Christmas. The main tree was located in the corner of our dining room. This was a great spot for a Christmas tree since there were windows on the walls in the corner behind the tree. The sides of the tree that couldn’t easily be seen from the room could be seen through the windows. Our house was on the busiest street in the small town were we lived so everyone could see our tree. We would keep the blinds on the windows in this room open during Christmas. The lights on the tree would be the only lights we would keep on in that room.

Fast Food Service and Work Uniforms

Today, I was eating lunch at a fast food restaurant.  This is one of the restaurants where they take your name when they take your order instead of assigning you a number. When your order is ready, they announce your name.  The young lady waiting on me asked my name and I told her. She didn’t understand and asked me again. I repeated my name and spelled it for her to make sure she understood. She smiled as she replied, “OK! Cool!” I thought it was unusual for anyone to think that the name Art is cool but I thought she was just being nice. While I was waiting for my food, I prepared my drink and grabbed some napkins.  I stayed near the counter because the store was crowded and I wanted to give it a chance to clear out before I sat down. Another lady behind the counter was gathering food for orders and I thought I recognized my order in her hand. At the time, I was the only person who was waiting near the counter for an order.  She stepped up to the counter and announced “Ant!”

Waffle House From Hell

My wife’s grandmother lived in Nashville right before she died. A few weeks after she passed away, my wife, my mother-in-law and I went to Nashville to help clean out her apartment. We traveled in two vehicles. My wife and I were in my small pickup truck. We were going to transport bedroom furniture. My mother-in-law was going to bring everything else in her car.  It was a long day full of memories. We also visited with my wife’s aunt and cousin.  They lived in Nashville.  I don’t remember how early we got into town but it was very late before we were leaving. I was ready to get home as quickly as possible but everyone else wanted to stop for a snack. That’s when we decided to stop at the Waffle House.

Sorry, Wrong Number

Several years ago, I was driving my son to school on a Friday morning.  My cell phone rang. I looked at the screen and it wasn’t a number that I had programmed in my phone so just the number showed.  I saw that the call was from a phone with a Memphis area code. I have several friends who live around Memphis that I could potentially get calls from so I answered.  The voice on the other end said “Let me speak to Leroy!”  I wasn’t expecting to hear this and wasn’t sure what I just heard so I replied “What!?!”  Then they asked “Is this Leroy?” I answered, “No, this is not Leroy.”  I replied saying the name so my son would hear me say it so I would hopefully remember the details of this conversation. The person apologized for calling the wrong number and hung up.

Halloween Hijinks

Halloween was a big thing for the teenagers in the town where I grew up.  Sales of toilet paper and soap increased exponentially at all of the grocery stores.  These sales went to teens who had never been to the grocery store without their mom and mothers restocking their shelves at home that had been raided by their teens.  The sales of toilet paper and soap paled in comparison to the sale of eggs.  Egg throwing on Halloween was the favorite pastime of most teenagers in our little town and the surrounding community.  As the local police force turned a blind eye to everything but the worst of hijinks, our fair city became a little Hershey’s omelet every October 31.

What Scares Don Knotts Scares Me

When the movie “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” made it to theaters around where I lived in 1966, I was 4 and 1/2 years old. I don’t have that many memories of this time in my life but I do remember specifically wanting to see this movie. I remember seeing the ads on TV. I’m sure that made me want to see it more than anything else. I don’t know how often my mom took me to the movies when I was this age. It didn’t really matter. The ad campaign for this one was doing its job on me. I remember seeing newspaper ads for it too. These ads where the way that I knew it was showing in theaters near us. I remember these ads because I remember “picking up” the newspaper in from these ads with Silly Putty. I remember doing this with the newspaper at my grandmother’s house. I was staying with her while my parents were at the hospital when my sister was being born. This is why they couldn’t take me to the movies.

Scary Happenings While Watching Evil Dead

I saw Evil Dead when it first came out in 1981. I was in college at the time and there was a group of us called the Bad Cinema Club that went to see nearly every horror that was released at that time. This is not to say that all horror movies are bad. But there are a lot that are and we would go to see as many as we could to make sure we saw the bad ones.  I do not intend to go through the plot of the movie here. I will say that this movie stood out among all of the others that we were going to see. It had an eerie feel to it that at the time made it seem more real than most of the other horror movies we were going to see. My thoughts at the time were that this stuff was really happening to the people on the screen.  They just turned the camera on and recorded what was happening.

Seeing Friday the 13th Part II on Bargain Night is Scary

I was a freshman in college when Friday the 13th Part II was released. By the time this one came out, I was more familiar with the jump scare techniques they used in the first Friday the 13th film. During my first semester of college, I had helped form a group called the Bad Cinema Club. We would go to see almost any horror film that was released at that time. The studios were putting out a glut of horror films because of the success of Friday the 13th and Halloween. We could go and see something almost every week.  Since we were college students trying to be mindful of how much money we spent, we would try and go to see these movies on bargain night.  Friday the 13th Part II would be showing at the old Malco Theater in Jackson, Tennessee. This was located in downtown Jackson just off of the court square. The audience for this film would be filled with broke college kids, drunks from the downtown bars, and easy to scare poor people from the neighborhoods around the downtown area. This would be the perfect audience for watching this scary movie.

How Friday the 13th Scared Me and My Friends

I didn’t jump on the modern horror movie bandwagon until the release of Friday the 13th. When it was released May 9, 1980, it had been about a year and half since Halloween had made its debut.  I had completely missed Halloween and never really paid much attention to it until Halloween II came out in 1981.  So I had little to prepare me for the experience of Friday the 13th.

Feeling Refreshed in Vietnam

We spent most of the last day of my recent trip to Vietnam sightseeing.  We were in Ho Chi Minh City which was formerly Saigon. We were going to spend time in the downtown area checking out museums and looking at historic areas. Before we left our hotel, one of our hosts told us what he usually does when he has a flight later in the day like the one we had. He would leave his luggage at the hotel with the concierge and return a couple of hours before his flight left. He would then go to the spa at the hotel for a shower to get refreshed from a day out in the city. Since we were in a tropical zone during the rainy season where there was extremely high humidity, this sounded like a good idea. The night we had arrived in Vietnam, the humidity was smothering at 11 in the evening when we exited the airport. It didn’t get much better any time we were there except immediately after a rainstorm.  A shower should be refreshing alternative to just getting on the plane like I normally do during international travel.
