8-Track Memories

In January of 1978, my friends and I started getting out on weekends to spend time together. We would occasionally go to the movies, go bowling or visit an arcade. Most of the time, we would ride the streets of our little town in search of girls to talk with. During this time, an 8-track tape player standard equipment in any of the cars where we regularly spent time. While my musical tastes were always a bit more eclectic than my friends, there were a handful of mainstream rock albums that I really loved that became our soundtrack for that time in our lives. These were albums that I completely loved but had no desire to own a copy because I got to hear them enough when we were out on the town. As I entered college, I would finally break down and pick up copies of these albums.  By that time, vinyl would become my preferred music format. Some of these would later become staples of my CD collection. All of them are on my iPod right now.

The following list includes the most important of these recordings. I’ve also included a few notes relating to each title. I have also noted the differences in the song order from the album to the 8-track tape. I’ve also noted where some of the songs were split between two tracks. Only people who listened to music on 8-track can appreciate memories of a song fading out in the middle, the loud ka-chunk of the player and the song fading back in.

Valentine’s Day Father Daughter Dance

When my girls were young, it became a tradition for us to attend a Father Daughter dance around Valentine’s Day. My oldest daughter was three years old when we went to our first dance. She was so excited about the dance that she did not get her normal afternoon nap that day. There were struggles and a few tears as she was getting dressed for the dance because she was tired.  She had a new dress just for the dance. We would arrive at the dance early that also included a dinner.

Elvis Week Graceland Influences

Boston Concert

August 15, 1978 marked the eve of the first anniversary of the death of  Elvis Presley. This would be the first time I would visit Memphis on August 15 that I remember but this first trip was not to attend an Elvis Candlelight Vigil. I’m sure the Elvis fans gathered there that year just as they had a year before when he died on August 16. But I’m sure whatever observations that Elvis’ faithful fans had that year were probably hampered by a policeman’s strike in Memphis. There were already National Guard troops patrolling the streets of Memphis when the city’s firefighters joined the strike. Add to that the first ever mass influx of tourists to Memphis just to see Graceland. There were no official events planned and I’m sure any attempt at a candlelight vigil was probably not welcome by local officials who had declared a curfew starting at 8 PM to try and curb violence by angry police on the previous nights. It’s amazing that Elvis Week ever took off when its roots were in an environment like this.

McDonald’s Cheeseburger

My father was traveling through Memphis when I was a kid. As he was leaving Memphis he stopped at a McDonalds on Summer Avenue near the edge of town. He went into the store, went up to the counter and placed his order. He wanted a cheeseburger. A cheeseburger costs 65 cents. He told them he wanted a 65 cheeseburger. They understood that he wanted 65 cheeseburgers. The guy travelling with my dad got his order quickly. My dad was waiting for a while. This was a time when you didn’t pay for your meal until after they had the food at the counter. They brought out a big grocery bag full of McDonalds cheeseburgers. This is when they discovered that my dad only wanted one burger.

Done With Diapers

It was a cold Sunday morning in February.  I was still in bed but my wife had already gotten up and was in the shower getting ready for church. I was drifting in and out of a state of sleep when I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was my son. I rolled over and looked at him. He was standing there wearing one of the tee shirts that he wore at night. He lifted it up to show me that he had changed out of the diaper that he wore through the night and he had put on his underwear. We were in that transition time with a child that wasn’t that excited about moving away from diapers.  It was a major accomplishment that he was willing to do this on his own. I wanted to reinforce this positive behavior and I bragged on him. I told him it was great and he needed to go show his mom what she had done. I saw him run off into the bathroom where she was still in the shower and heard her talking to him. I rolled over and drifted back off into a state of semi-unconsciousness.

Breadsticks and Giant Men in Diapers

Last Saturday evening, my wife cooked a chicken and pasta meal.  It had lots of vegetables and the sauce was very light. This meal was very similar to others that she has done in the past. There are some variations on the types and amounts of vegetables and noodles. There is also variation in the sauces.  This one was really good. We also had a salad and Italian bread with this meal. She likes to get the extremely long sticks of Italian bread and on Saturday, she got two of these.

Star Wars…Nothing But Star Wars

When I returned to high school in the fall of 1977, one of the kids in my class was wearing a shirt with a phrase on it that said “May The Force Be With You”.  I found out quickly that this was related to the film Star Wars which had come out earlier that year. Obviously, I had not seen it yet. Even though Star Wars had come out in May of that year, it was not the full on cultural phenomenon that it would become. I will also admit that I might not have been the most in tune person to the latest in movies.  While I enjoy sci-fi movies, I didn’t feel compelled to rush out to see the latest one every time a new one came out.  I was 15 and a little too old to be fascinated with a movie that sold toys for kids and a little too young to be able to make it to the movies without an older friend or my parents.  By the time I finally did go to see it, the Meco recording of the Star Wars theme had become a hit and the world had gone through its first Christmas with a rush on Star Wars toys that the manufacturers weren’t ready for.  Star Wars ran for what seemed like a year before it left theaters. My mother took me and my friend Timmy to see it the very last week of that original run. I enjoyed it and immediately understood why so many people went to see it so many times.

Christmas Communion

Christmas Communion

Among our family Christmas traditions is Christmas Eve communion. This tradition didn’t start until I was in college. At that time, the pastor at the church I grew up in started serving come and go communion and this tradition continues today. Even before this tradition started, we would go to my grandparents’ house on Christmas Eve. When this started, the family would go to church as a large group and receive communion.

Wheeler Family Christmas Tree

I have fond memories of decorating the Christmas tree when I was growing up. We always used an artificial tree. This was not the realistic artificial trees that you see today. The branches of this tree had a green hue that was identical to the color of the green army men that I played with regularly. I’m willing to bet that it was the same type plastic and possibly made at the same factory. It was not a tall tree either. It probably wasn’t over 5 feet tall. When I was young, it didn’t seem that small but as I got older, I realized how short it was. The angel at the top of the tree was never in danger of scraping the ceiling.

My Grandparents’ Christmas Tree

My grandparents are the only people that I can remember having an aluminum Christmas tree. These trees became popular in the early 1960’s. I don’t know when my grandparents got theirs but I don’t remember a Christmas before they got it and since I was born in 1962, there is a good chance that they were using it for my very first Christmas.  The only decorations on the tree were balls and all of them were blue. My grandparents also had a color light wheel for the tree just like everyone else who had these. The wheel would be pointed at the tree would slowly rotate changing the color of the light shining on the tree. It seems like the motor on the wheel quit working after a few years. My grandparents didn’t buy a new wheel or get the motor repaired. Instead they chose to leave the blue light shining on the tree.
