The Best Fried Chicken in Lexington, Kentucky

My youngest daughter Mary spent the last year in graduate school at the University of Kentucky.  My wife and I went with her on an apartment hunting trip a year ago.  We were able to find a reasonably priced apartment that wasn’t far from campus.  The apartment complex was gated which gave us a sense of security about where she was moving.  She was also within walking distance of a couple of candy shops.  There was one literally a couple of doors down from her apartment building.  The other one was around the corner and would have been a bit of a stretch for walking.  But Mary likes to walk, and it would have been reasonable for her.  That candy shop is a strip mall that has several other stores including a Save A Lot grocery store.  A sign outside of this grocery declared that it had the “Best Fried Chicken in Lexington”.  We thought this was a bold statement for a relatively low-profile grocery store that might otherwise go unnoticed.  It also seemed unlikely that in Kentucky, a place that people associate with Kentucky Fried Chicken, one of the highest profile chicken restaurants in the world, a discount grocery store chain would have the best chicken you could get in town.  There had to be some place better.  Because of the pandemic, family never made any trips just to visit so we never got a chance to try it out.

Downsizing

Things were changing in the summer 2019.  Our youngest daughter was entering her last year of college.  Our oldest daughter had been out of the house for about a year.  We were beginning to feel like empty nesters.  My wife asked me what I thought about downsizing.  We had been in our house since 2006 and were coming up on having been there for a full 13 years.  One of the bedrooms upstairs had been converted to an extra family room when our son moved out and another bedroom turned into a music room when another child left.  My wife didn’t like going upstairs to clean rooms that weren’t used that often.  There were a lot of reasons that now seemed like an ideal time to downsize.

The Last M*A*S*H Episode

On February 28, 1983, one of the greatest television series came to an end.  M*A*S*H had become one of the biggest comedy series ever.  The last episode was a big deal.  I was in college at the time and the last episode of a show like this was a good excuse for fraternities to have parties.  Every fraternity on our campus would have a M*A*S*H themed party and mine was no exception.  Everyone wore military or medical themed outfits. The administration of our Methodist Church affiliated school was well aware that everyone would be having parties that night so they would be on patrol for potential infractions of the no-alcohol on campus policy.  The fraternity houses were owned by the school, so we expected the visit that the Deans made early that night.

High School Evangelist

I went to school with a quiet guy named David.  David was a quiet guy that I never got to know that well.  He was just someone that was there.  He didn’t seem to have many friends.  And he wasn’t involved in many activities.  He seemed to be of average intelligence.  Not too smart, not too dumb.  He was not a class clown. He never did anything much to draw attention to himself.  Until our senior year when he decided to start preaching in the halls.

New Year’s Eve at Benihana

Years ago, we had a large group of friends who decided to go to Benihanas for New Year’s Eve.  Three couples from Jackson, TN were meeting three more couples from Memphis at the Benihana in Memphis.  We had enough people to fill a Hibachi table to capacity.  They had a special New Year’s Eve meal deal going and everyone in our party decided we would get it.  I don’t remember exactly what all was included with the special, but it did say it included fried rice.  We arrived late enough that we would be seeing in the new year at our table.

Drinks at GG’s Family Restaurant

When I was in college, my friends and I would often make late night runs to restaurants that were opened all night.  One night my friend Mark suggested we go to a place called GG’s.  It was a locally owned diner in a building that was previously a Sambo’s chain restaurant.  The Sambo’s had closed because of the racially insensitive name and imagery used in the stores.  I only remember going to this place once when it was Sambos and maybe once before this after it had changed names.

Bad Date

I never had a girlfriend in high school. Dates never turned into relationships. It was a rare occasion when I went out with a girl more than once. I have a cousin who would occasionally set me up on blind dates. We would double date on these occasions to try and make things go well. Things never clicked on these dates. There was one evening that seems more memorable than the others.

Jesus Loves the Little Children

I was about 4 or 5 years old. I was in Sunday School class with about 10 guys all around my age.  One of the guys was named Ricky.  Ricky’s mom taught our class.  Occasionally we would sing.  One song we would sing was Jesus Loves the Little Children.  The lyrics were,

Jesus loves the little child-ren

All the children of the world

Red and yellow, black and white

They are precious in his sight

Jesus loves the little children of the world

Doctor Visit

Last weekend, my oldest daughter was visiting us.  My wife was telling her about the things she had coming up this week.  My wife mentioned that she would be taking her father to see a Dr Bada on Tuesday.  My daughter said she wondered if that was Donald’s father.  My daughter had gone to high school with a kid named Donald Bada and Donald’s father was a doctor.  My wife replied “how many Dr. Badas can there be?”

I replied “99.  On the wall.”

99 Badas of…

Rules for Attending Virtual Meetings

The use of services like Zoom and Teams has greatly increased with the pandemic.  I had never heard of Zoom before the pandemic and Teams was a tool that we had only started playing around with at work.  These programs allow you to do group video calls.  You can also share what you are working on from your computer desktop.  This week, I discovered some new rules for myself regarding meetings that I attend on-line.
