Reflections on Creation: Day 7 – Rest

This is the last in a series of seven posts where I share my thoughts about my song Creation and the story in the first chapter of Genesis.

“This story tells God had a plan
And an order before He even started on man
So the seventh day God took a rest
Because He’d gone and done His best
And the sixth day God made the beast of land
He made the woman and he made the man
And the fifth day God made the fish and bird
He made them all with His Holy word
And the fourth day God filled the sky with lights
The sun for day and the moon for nights
And the third day God made the plants and trees
He made dry ground and He made the seas
And the second day God made the sky
The water split so the firmament’s dry
And the first day God made the heavens and earth
Split the dark and light in the universe
And to mark the time there was morning and evening
And He saw that it was good”

God rests on the seventh day.  I think the next mention of a Sabbath as a thing for God’s people is when they are given the 10 Commandments.  I believe it’s very likely that the observance of the Sabbath was something common well before it was established as the law given to Moses.  Nevertheless, this part of the creation story is here to establish a reason for this to be a thing for God’s people.  Is there a good reason that we would observe a Sabbath?  A scientific reason to do this?  A reason other than a religious reason?  I don’t think so.  We do it because we believe in a power higher than us.  A power that was able to create all of this.  We pause in awe of God.  We pause to acknowledge his presence in our world.

Reflections on Creation: Day 6 – Land Animals and Man

This is the sixth in a series of seven posts where I share my thoughts about my song Creation and the story in the first chapter of Genesis.

“On the sixth day God made the beast of land
And to watch it all, He created man
Woman and man He created them
In an image that was just like Him
So the sixth day God made the beast of land
He made the woman and he made the man
And the fifth day God made the fish and bird
He made them all with His Holy word
And the fourth day God filled the sky with lights
The sun for day and the moon for nights
And the third day God made the plants and trees
He made dry ground and He made the seas
And the second day God made the sky
The water split so the firmament’s dry
And the first day God made the heavens and earth
Split the dark and light in the universe
And to mark the time there was morning and evening
And He saw that it was good”

This is the first story of Creation of man.  There is no Adam and Eve. It just says that he created them male and female. There is no mention of woman being made from the rib of a man.  It doesn’t say how many he created.  We have to wait for a second creation story in the second chapter of Genesis to get those details.  Again, some people would argue that there are differences in the creation stories in the first two chapters of Genesis somehow proving that this story is not accurate.  Other people would deny that these are separate stories at all and turn a blind eye to any differences.  I see these as two different stories intended to show us different aspects of God’s relationship with his creation.  In this story in chapter one, God creates mankind in his image making man special.  He also puts mankind as the caretaker of his creation.  This story is telling us that man is different from the rest of creation and establishes his relationship with that creation.

Reflections on Creation: Day 5 – Fish and Bird

This is the fifth in a series of seven posts where I share my thoughts about my song Creation and the story in the first chapter of Genesis.

“On the fifth day God filled the sea and sky
With creatures that could swim and fly
He blessed each one as they passed His eye
That they’d be fruitful and multiply
So the fifth day God made the fish and bird
He made them all with His Holy word
And the fourth day God filled the sky with lights
The sun for day and the moon for nights
And the third day God made the plants and trees
He made dry ground and He made the seas
And the second day God made the sky
The water split so the firmament’s dry
And the first day God made the heavens and earth
Split the dark and light in the universe
And to mark the time there was morning and evening
And He saw that it was good”

The first animals are created by God on the fifth day.  Again there is an order to this process.  God chooses to fill the sky and the sea with animals before the earth is populated.  I believe that this is more about showing order instead of trying to coordinate with any scientific explanation.  God’s hand is present as His creation begins to fill with animals.  This is evident in the story when tells them to be fruitful and multiply.   The animals of the land would have to wait until day six.

Reflections on Creation: Day 4 – Sun and Moon

This is the fourth in a series of seven posts where I share my thoughts about my song Creation and the story in the first chapter of Genesis.

“On the fourth day God filled the sky with lights
The sun for day and the moon for nights
And He scattered stars in the evening sky
As signs to mark the seasons by
So the fourth day God filled the sky with lights
The sun for day and the moon for nights
And the third day God made the plants and trees
He made dry ground and He made the seas
And the second day God made the sky
The water split so the firmament’s dry
And the first day God made the heavens and earth
Split the dark and light in the universe
And to mark the time there was morning and evening
And He saw that it was good”

We measure the length of a day by how long it takes the earth to rotate one full turn.  Because of this, many of us have decided that the “days” talked about in the creation story had to be 24 hours long.  Others will discount any credibility of the creation story because science tells us that it took a lot longer for many of these things to happen.  If the sun wasn’t created until the fourth day, how would we know how to measure the length of the first three days?  Even the length of the fourth day would be in question.  As a Christian, I don’t have a problem with the idea that these things took many years to happen.  As a scientist, I don’t have a problem with a supernatural act of creation taking 24 hours or even happening instantaneous.  If something supernatural happens, what does the evidence look like?

And is any of this important to the creation story.  I believe the whole idea of creation happening over the course of seven days is more important in establishing God’s participation in the event and establishing the Sabbath than giving a detailed scientific and historical explanation.  The creation of the heavenly bodies serves as a marker for the seasons and is therefore not necessary until there would be creatures on the planet that would benefit from these signs.  To the writers of this story, it is not necessary for God to create these things until they are needed by the creation.

Reflections on Creation: Day 3 – Plants

This is the third in a series of seven posts where I share my thoughts about my song Creation and the story in the first chapter of Genesis.

“On the third day God took all the sea
And split it up where the ground would be
And He filled the ground with plants and trees
That reproduce by making seeds
So the third day God made the plants and trees
He made dry ground and He made the seas
And the second day God made the sky
The water split so the firmament’s dry
And the first day God made the heavens and earth
Split the dark and light in the universe
And to mark the time there was morning and evening
And He saw that it was good”

At this point in the story, the earth is still covered with water.  It is gathered into one place so the plants start growing. My daughter asked me how the plants could survive without the sun.  I didn’t think about it at the time but the story tells us that we do have light.  God is the source of the light and the source of life for these plants.

This is the point in the story where life begins to be present on the earth.  This seems to go well with the scientific evidence of how life began on earth.  Again this is not a scientific explanation of how things happened.  The original audience for this story would not have understood a scientific explanation.  What was important was that it tell that God had a part in the creation.  This is the reason I have the line in my song where I say:

“This story tells God had a plan
And an order before He even started on man”

Reflections on Creation: Day 2 – Firmament

This is the second in a series of seven posts where I share my thoughts about my song Creation and the story in the first chapter of Genesis.

“On the next day God took the water high
He split it up and He made it dry
It’s a great expanse that He called the sky
With water low and water high
So the second day God made the sky
The water split so the firmament’s dry
And the first day God made the heavens and earth
Split the dark and light in the universe
And to mark the time there was morning and evening
And He saw that it was good”

The first time I performed this song for my family, my youngest daughter immediately asked “What is a firmament?”  I didn’t have a good way to explain it to her.  The easiest way to describe it is to say it’s “the sky”.  That doesn’t really give a full explanation of what the people who originally told this story meant when they referred to the firmament.  This term goes back to the days when scholars believed that the world was flat.  They also believed that the sun, moon and stars were embedded in a dome that went over the earth.  In this creation story, the heavenly bodies weren’t made until the fourth day.  According to this scripture, they also believed there was water above this dome.  From the understanding of the universe at that time, it makes perfect sense that a “firmament” would be the next thing to be made.  God has to do a lot with all of the water in this story to get the earth to the state that we are familiar with.  Creating a sky over the earth would be the perfect next step for getting all of the water away from the earth.

Reflections on Creation: Day 1 – Heaven and Earth

This is the first in a series of seven posts where I share my thoughts about my song Creation and the story in the first chapter of Genesis.

When I wrote the song Creation, I was doing mainly as a memory device.  Before I wrote the song if you asked me what God created on what day according to the story in Genesis 1, I would not be able to tell you.  I’m always looking for stories from the Bible as the foundation for my songs.  This story seemed to be a natural.  I immediately came up with the idea of repeating lines like in the songs The Green Grass Grew All Around and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.  I thought this would make the order easier to remember.

“On the first day God made the heavens and earth
And He made the light with His Holy word
Split the dark and light in an equal way
Called the darkness night and the light was day
So the first day God made the heavens and earth
Split the dark and light in the universe
And to mark the time there was morning and evening
And He saw that it was good”

Black Funeral

Several years ago, a friend and co-worker passed away.  He worked in the same department that I do.  He had been ill and in the hospital for a short period of time previous to his death.  It was still hard on the people in our department.    This is the first time I remember having a co-worker this close to me die.  It was also the first time that I remember going to the visitation and funeral for a co-worker.  My friend was also African-American so it would also be my first black funeral.

Brush, Trees and Neighbors

My neighbor has several crepe myrtles in his yard that he had cut back to an extreme about 2 weeks ago.  The trimmings from the tree were rather large and some of them ended up in my yard.  I’m an easy going guy and while I didn’t really like it, I didn’t say anything to my neighbor.  My wife did say something to the people that cut the trees a few days later when they were moving the trimmings to the edge of the road to be picked up by the city.  She asked if they cut them and they said no.  I think they were afraid that she was upset.  Anyway, they moved them to the edge of the road.  Even then, some of them were still in our yard.  I ended up have to mow around them at least twice. Still, I didn’t complain to the neighbors.

Sick Girls

When my girls were little, they shared a bedroom.  They are four and a half years apart in age.  And the younger of the two was a hypochondriac.  Whenever her big sister was sick, Mary would want the same attention that was given to her sister.  If we took May’s temperature, Mary needed to be checked too.  If May wanted a damp towel on her head, Mary also needed one.  And if May needed medicine, Mary wanted the same medicine.  May would get sick and have a terrible cough.  While I was tending to her, Mary would begin to cough too.  But Mary’s cough was obviously not real.  She wasn’t mocking her big sister either.  This was clearly an attempt to get the same attention that her sister was getting.  I would go downstairs to get medicine for May.  Most of the time, this medicine was either a red or purple liquid.  I would bring it in one of those measuring cups that came attached to the bottles.  I would also bring a small cup of water to help wash down the medicine.  Regardless of what fruit flavor they made the medicine, my children always hated it and wanted water.  While I was giving May her medicine, Mary continued with her fake cough and asked for medicine.  I didn’t want to give her something she didn’t need.  But I did want to give her the attention she wanted.  I went downstairs and filled the medicine cup with grape Kool-Aid and got a cup of water for her.  She had no idea that she was not getting medicine.  And when she drank the Kool-Aid, she winced like she had downed the more horrible medicine ever and drank the water as quickly as possible.  This was the same Kool-Aid she drank at most meals with no problem at all.  Her cough magically disappeared.
