Mother’s Day Memories

Almost every year that I’ve been on social media, I have shared the picture above around Mother’s Day. It’s one of my favorite pictures of my mom because I think it tells the perfect story of what kind of mother and wife she was.  She seems to be completely into her task of getting ready for bed, unphased the constant banging of the snare drum her son has brought into the bathroom.  If I remember correctly, I brought this drum into the bathroom after she was already there. This bathroom had tile on the floor and most of the walls, so you know that the sound of the drum got maximum reverberation. I don’t remember her complaining at all.  I’m sure this is just one example of her putting up with an energetic, noisy son. Especially if it was related to making music in any way at all, I was always encouraged, even when my timing wasn’t so great.

Birthday 2022

This year marks the seventh year that my wife has bought me a birthday gift for every day of March, my birth month.  As is my tradition, I share this list of gifts and thank my wife for generosity.  She wanted to do a big party this year to celebrate a noteworthy number of years (60).  I told her that I didn’t want to have a party, instead I wanted a Diamond Jubilee.  What I really wanted a chance to get to spend time with family and friends.  The Diamond Jubilee was light on pomp and circumstance, heavy on fun.  Thanks to everyone who made turning 60 special.

Moving Mix-up

I like to grill food. I prefer grilling on a charcoal grill.  My go-to grill is a Weber Kettle grill. They are relatively inexpensive but versatile.  One of the features of the Weber Kettle is that it has options for accessories that they refer to as their Gourmet Grilling System.  The heart of this system is the cooking grate that has a removable center where you can insert a variety optional cooking surfaces like, chicken roasting pans, a griddle, and a wok.  One of our family’s favorite inserts is a pizza stone. We set up an assembly line at the grill to make pizzas with a variety of toppings to each person’s taste.

Announcing My Birth

Not every birth makes front page news but mine did.  My dad worked for The Crockett Times, the county newspaper where we lived. Because he worked there when I was born, the newspaper saw fit to run my birth announcement on the front page. As you can see above, there was nothing special about the announcement or anything to make it stand out from any other birth announcement that might run in the paper.  I’m not a prince or the member of one of the more influential families of Crockett County.  Just the kid of one of the paper employees that was well liked by the boss.

First Week of Work

During my first week of work at my current employer, it was a time of discovery and exploration.  There were several times during those first few days that I would walk around the facility just to get a feel for where everything was.  The facility was huge with three different break rooms and four sets of restrooms.  I would walk from one department to another making mental notes of where everything was and familiarize myself with the processes and people in each department.

First Day of Work

When I was interviewing for my current job, I was walking down the hall of the office area and I saw someone that I knew.  I saw Mark King, who is from my home county and several years younger than me.  I didn’t know Mark that well, but I recognized him, and we spoke. It was nice to see a familiar face at the job interview.  Although I didn’t know it at the time, Mark was a Technician in the quality department. I was interviewing for a position as a Quality Engineer so we would end up working together.

Dorm Room Next Door Neighbor

Spangler Hall from inside Lambuth Campus

For my sophomore year at Lambuth College, I left the safety and security of Harris Hall, the freshman men’s dormitory, and moved to the first floor of Spangler Hall. The first floor of Spangler Hall was also known as the Spangler hotel Because people could come and go freely at all times of the day and night. All the dorms had policies About when men could be in the women’s dormitories and vice versa. In general, women were not allowed in men’s dorm rooms, could only enter through the main lobby doors and the doors were locked after 10 PM every night so access was limited. Spangler Hall was different from all the rest of the dorms because the main lobby door was on the second floor. There was another lobby on the first floor of Spangler, but no one monitored the comings and goings through this door. My room was the third door from the end on the ground floor if you were facing Spangler from the road. I was well behaved in comparison to most of the people on this floor, including my next-door neighbor, Jim.

Road Trip and a Load of Logs

When I was a freshman at Lambuth College, they would conduct an interim program each January. During that month, you would only take one class, but it met every day, usually for 3 hours. The topics were varied, usually based on the professor’s interests outside of their normal studies. I remember people taking classes where they played games every day and others where they learned about fly fishing.  I took a class on Sherlock Holmes taught by music professor Dr. Don Huneycutt. This class was typical of the ones offered during the interim program in that it didn’t take very much time in the day to attend the class and prepare. So Lambuth would become a party school every January during interim. Most of the classes met in the morning so extracurricular activities started early in the afternoon. This also gave us an opportunity to go to some of the away basketball games that were a little bit further away from campus than normal. My friend Kevin invited me on a road trip to the University of North Alabama in Florence. Our friend Michelle also went on this trip.

Dean of Students

Dean Walter Whybrew was the executive Vice President of Lambuth College in 1980 when I arrived. He started at Lambuth in 1957 and was Dean and Registrar when my mom started there in 1959. Over the years he served as Registrar, Dean of Admissions, Academic Dean and Executive Vice President.  In addition to his other duties, he helped form the Lambuth band and led them for three years until they could hire a full-time director to the staff. He was beloved staff and students and is best remembered for a speech that he made during freshman orientation.

The Odd Guy in the Cafeteria

When I was a student at Lambuth College, I regularly ate lunch and dinner in the cafeteria.  I’m not much of a breakfast guy and was always waiting until the last minute to make it to that first class of the day. The cafeteria was a gathering place for most of the people on campus.  If you wanted to get a message to everyone on campus, making an announcement during the normal mealtimes was your best bet for getting it to the most people. Everyone who stayed on campus was required to participate in the meal plan, but we still had some people from off campus that ate their too.  Many of the faculty were regulars for lunch. Then there were some other people that we weren’t sure why they were there.  I’m going to focus on someone that I’ll just refer to as The Odd Guy.
