Eating at the 1982 World’s Fair – Part Two

I spent some time with my family this past weekend and we talked about my previous post about the 1982 World’s Fair.  As we talked about the trip, we started talking about another notable meal that we ate during this trip.

Eating at the 1982 World’s Fair

The 1982 World’s Fair was held in Knoxville, Tennessee.  Knoxville is about a 5-hour drive from where we lived at the time. Our family decided to go to the fair for our summer vacation. My wife and I were dating at the time and my family invited her to go on the trip. My sister invited one of her friends to go on the trip too.  The six of us traveled to Knoxville for the fair.  One of my cousins was in veterinarian school in Knoxville at the time. We stayed with him and his wife and they acted as our tour guides while we were at the fair.

Bob Evans Coffee

Several years ago, my family were on vacation.  We decided to stop at a Bob Evans restaurant for breakfast. We don’t have any Bob Evans restaurants very close to where we live and my family had never been to one before. I had eaten at one during my work travel and had an idea of the type of food you could get there.  There was a Bob Evans close to where we were staying one night and I recommended it when my wife said she wanted breakfast.  Everyone was satisfied with everything we had except for my wife. She didn’t like the coffee.  She assumed that it was just a bad batch of coffee. We didn’t really think that much of it at the time.

Eating At Subway

I have a cousin that is several years younger than me. He was probably a pre-teen when my wife and moved back to our hometown. My wife was the news editor for the county’s weekly newspaper and covered everything including wrecks, fires, government meetings and sports. We would go to most of the high school basketball games. My cousin enjoyed basketball and we invited to go with us to one of the games in a nearby town. Our plan was to leave early enough to eat somewhere in the town where the game was being played.

IHOP Revisited

We showed up at the IHOP after church expecting nothing different from any other visit to IHOP. We arrived a little later than normal so we had to wait to be seated. I went to the hostess station and she asked how many.  I said two.  Then she asked my name and I told her. Then she asked me to spell it.  Then she asked how many and I said two again. Later when she called our name, she mispronounced it.  She didn’t seem that excited to be at work but still managed to walk way ahead of us as she took us to our booth. Before my wife sat down, she noticed a brown, wet spot in her seat.  She said, “I can’t sit here!” I told her to sit on my side.  I was going to run to the restroom and someone could wipe down my seat while I was gone.  She was ok with that and I flagged down someone and asked them to clean my seat while I went to the restroom.

Eating With My Family After The Show

Empty restaurant buffet

In my previous post, I talked about a recent trip to see Gilbert Gottfried in Nashville. I didn’t mention that my wife and kids went with me to this show.  Because my youngest daughter was traveling back to school after the show, we were staying in Nashville for the evening.  We decided to grab a bite to eat after the show. I had seen a Shoney’s restaurant near our hotel and we decided to eat there.

Country Fried Steak

Over the years, my family and I have occasionally eaten at IHOP on Sundays after church.  IHOP isn’t the only restaurant like this where we eat on Sundays. Most of the time, we eat at home on Sundays. But this story takes place at a time when we were eating at IHOP more often.

One Sunday, I was a little more hungry than usual and decided that I would order the country fried steak meal. We placed our order and in a short while our waitress came back and told me said “We are out of CFS”. I was confused so I replied “What?” Then she told me, “We are out of CFS, country fried steak.” Since it’s not listed as CFS in the menu and I have never heard it referred to as CFS, I was surprised when she told me this and didn’t really understand what she was talking about until I got the explanation. I quickly ordered something else from the menu and didn’t really think anything about it. There was nothing else noteworthy about that trip.

McDonald’s Cheeseburger

My father was traveling through Memphis when I was a kid. As he was leaving Memphis he stopped at a McDonalds on Summer Avenue near the edge of town. He went into the store, went up to the counter and placed his order. He wanted a cheeseburger. A cheeseburger costs 65 cents. He told them he wanted a 65 cheeseburger. They understood that he wanted 65 cheeseburgers. The guy travelling with my dad got his order quickly. My dad was waiting for a while. This was a time when you didn’t pay for your meal until after they had the food at the counter. They brought out a big grocery bag full of McDonalds cheeseburgers. This is when they discovered that my dad only wanted one burger.

Waffle House From Hell

My wife’s grandmother lived in Nashville right before she died. A few weeks after she passed away, my wife, my mother-in-law and I went to Nashville to help clean out her apartment. We traveled in two vehicles. My wife and I were in my small pickup truck. We were going to transport bedroom furniture. My mother-in-law was going to bring everything else in her car.  It was a long day full of memories. We also visited with my wife’s aunt and cousin.  They lived in Nashville.  I don’t remember how early we got into town but it was very late before we were leaving. I was ready to get home as quickly as possible but everyone else wanted to stop for a snack. That’s when we decided to stop at the Waffle House.

Dessert in Singapore

I have written about my trip to China before.  I have talked about Chinese tea and being chased by monkeys.  I haven’t mentioned that this two week trip also included a visit to Singapore.  When they told me about a visit to Singapore, I didn’t have a good feel for where that was in relationship to Hong Kong or any of the places we were visiting in China.  In my mind I had it lumped in with China.  As the trip grew closer, began to study the geography of Southeast Asia more closely.

When you find Singapore on the map, looks like it should be a part of Malaysia.  Singapore is both a city and a state on the tip of a peninsula that includes part of Malaysia and Thailand.  Cambodia and Vietnam are also very close.  It is about a 4 hour flight from Hong Kong.
