Printer’s Drawer – Penny from Honeymoon

When my wife and I were planning our wedding back in 1985, she found an ad in the back of a bride magazine advertising a place with honeymoon cabins in the mountains of North Carolina.  This was the place we decided to spend our honeymoon.  The place was called Mountain Brook and they had a several cabins in a compound in Sylva, North Carolina.  At the time, they only rented to honeymooners. Each cabin had a living room, kitchen, and bedroom.  There were no televisions in the cabins. They had a separate building that you could schedule to use that had a steam room and hot tub.  The living room had a fireplace and they had wood for you to burn.  They also provided charcoal for the grills at each cabin.  There were also trails through the woods around the site for hiking.  We were close enough to take daytrips into the Smokies and Gatlinburg.  The cabins also provided plenty of privacy.  We enjoyed our stay at Mountain Brook.

Trip to Boston – 1995

On Saturday, February 4, 1995, a huge snowstorm hit Boston shutting down the airport.  On Sunday, February 5, 1995, I flew out of Memphis to Boston for a week of training. We had no issue on the flight.  It was when we got off the plane that the issues began.  As we approached the baggage pick-up area, the doors to the outside opened. A blast of air came through the doors that was colder than any that I had ever felt.  My first thought was that I didn’t want to go outside.  We soon caught a cab.  Our driver was a man with dark skin that we assumed was an immigrant because of his accent.  I’m not sure what language he was speaking on his radio.  It sounded like he was saying, “Ju ju ju ju ju ju.”  We never heard a word that sounded like anything else.  He took us to the Four Seasons Hotel where our training was being conducted.  This hotel was next to Boston Common, the oldest city park in the United States.

House Hunting Trip

I changed jobs in 1996 and moved to middle Tennessee.  The town where we were moving was about 4 hours from our home in West Tennessee. We only had two children at the time, but our daughter was only 2 and our son wasn’t even a year old.  We were going to spend a weekend in our new hometown looking for a house.  We planned a stop for a nice celebration meal in Jackson, Tennessee which was only minutes away from our house and on the way.  Our plans were disrupted when the kids immediately fell sound asleep as well before we got to Jackson.  Most of the time, you are better off continuing to drive while the kids are asleep.  We changed our plans and decided that the Burger King drive-thru would be a better option that night.

Wardrobe Malfunction at the Original Texas Roadhouse

A couple of weeks ago, I was travelling back to Tennessee from Indiana.  It was around 5 PM and we decided to stop and eat in Clarksville, Indiana which us just north of the river at Louisville. We hoped to let the rush hour traffic in Louisville clear before we went any further.  We found a Texas Roadhouse restaurant at the Green Tree Mall.  Our server told us that this was the very first Texas Roadhouse restaurant.  We thought it was odd that it didn’t originate in Texas.  After they took our drink order, I went to the restroom.  When I was zipping up my pants, my boxers got caught in the teeth of the zipper.  I could not get the zipper to budge up or down. I was standing at a urinal stall tugging at the zipper, but it was obvious that it wasn’t going to move.  Fortunately, I was alone in the restroom, so no one saw me wrestling with my fly.  I walked over to the mirror to see what it looked like.  The material over the zipper was covering it up. It was not gaping open.  I was confident that my lap would be covered any time that there was a possibility that it might gape open, so I returned to the table.

Haunted Hotel Dresser

I recently went on a business trip.  The trip took me to a small town in Indiana where I go often. I stayed in the same hotel that I had been in during the previous trip.  When I opened the door to my hotel room, I noticed that the top drawer of the dresser was open.  I immediately had flashbacks to a trip I had made to the same town but a stay at a different hotel years ago. During that trip when I opened the door to my room, I noticed the ironing board was up.  My first thought was that would be convenient since I usually iron my clothes for my trip when I arrive.  But when I turned on the lights to the room, I found that the room had not been cleaned since the previous guest had departed.  When I went back downstairs, they apologized and said that to make up for it, they would put me in an upgraded room.  I wondered what an upgraded room would be like at a hotel in a small town in Indiana beyond just being clean.  I remember that it had a refrigerator and a jacuzzi tub, neither of which I took advantage of.

Singing Karaoke in China

During one of the meals on my 2006 trip to China, I talked about music to some of the guys that we were visiting. They found out that I write and sing songs. I found out that some of our hosts were into karaoke. They thought that I would enjoy going to a karaoke bar. Why not? I didn’t know anyone that could say they had sung in a karaoke bar in China.

Street Confrontation in Hong Kong

In previous posts, I have talked about my weekend in Hong Kong in 2006.  In addition to shopping for a Fake Rolex, I spent this weekend being attacked by monkeys and a handicapped boy. While we were still looking for a fake Rolex vendor, we were standing at an intersection next to the street market. The vendors had their booths set-up in the street, so it was no problem for us and everyone else to be standing in the street.

Riding the Star Ferry in Hong Kong

I have shared my story about being attacked by monkeys on Monkey Mountain during my 2006 trip to China.  Later that day, we were visiting more places around Hong Kong.  We needed to travel to the other side of the harbor, so we took the Star Ferry. My traveling companion Mike told me that this ferry is the oldest in Hong Kong. He said it might be the oldest in China or maybe even the world. It is a famous Hong Kong tourist attraction ranking along side of the Eiffel Tower on some lists.

Shopping for a Fake Rolex in Hong Kong

Back 2006, I went on a two-week trip to China, with a side trip to Singapore. Before I went, I talked to several people who had taken this trip that mentioned buying fake Rolex watches in Hong Kong. I considered picking one up as a gift if I could get a good deal on one.  I was travelling with a guy named Mike who traveled regularly to China.  He knew several of the people that had bought these watches and knew the market area where we might be able to find them. We spent the middle weekend of our trip in Hong Kong and I shopped for gifts for my family then.

Riding the Revolution at Libertyland

Libertyland was an amusement park with a patriotic theme located at the Mid-South Fairgrounds in Memphis.  It was probably best known for the roller coaster called the Zippin Pippin in part because Elvis Presley declared it as his favorite ride.  This ride was built at the Fairgounds around 1912, years before the amusement park opened on July 4, 1976.  I have several friends who were music performers at Libertyland in its early years. One of them was even an Elvis impersonator.  Libertyland was only a moderate success.  Most of my visits to Libertyland were made during the Mid-South Fair in the fall and rarely a summer trip when it was just the amusement park.
